Mural @ Tirana Backpacker’s Hostel, Albania.

Is nice to fall in love with a painting you are working on.

When it was wet and drying I breathed into it, to enliven.

And after it was complete, watched it for hours to be sure.

That nothing more was missing, and that it would not fall.

Out of the wall.

It is just north of Greece, and on the wall beside the steps.

My son Arc and I decided to take on a wallpiece together.

The managers said yes, and had a range of paints to party.

There were varnishes, oils and acrylics, we had some also.

Layers were envisioned, the transparent varnishes excited.

A semi-subtle spot of wall in the passage, with some holes.

Bits of the wall somehow already gouged out and exposed.

Some already peeling paint in the zone was scraped back.

It was gnarley and pokey, slightly grungy and was perfect.

So it was this portion of wall that the varnish imposed on.

It was one of my first wall murals, and Arc (4yo) was virgin.

We began, and got it glossy, left to dry and returned to make.

There was no plan on what it would be, instead to discover.

I wanted Arc to be able to lead, and me initially to reinforce.

On the second day of painting the youth aborted the mission.

He had left his mark, many foundational shapes are from he.

And from there I was able to seep completely and whenever.

I was able to obsess, to envision, find faces and form them.

Many faces, breasts and special male and female bits found.

A recent drawing of hundreds of fish influenced this work.

Layers of varnish, acrylics and oils merged and curdled on.

Waiting for layers to dry ensured time just to gaze and feel.

Envisioning the layers may be viewable and give cool effect.

A fan and light helped drying- less waiting on one rainy day.

With a gutsy base level set, went from thick to thin brushes.

Nearly all the venues paint types had been applied somehow.

With a time for detail pulled out our acrylic and watercolours.

It dries more quickly, had a full range of base colours to mix.

An earlier layer was quite black, so bright acrylics were used.

The piece is intense, deep, dripping, alive and other things, but.

I wanted to be sure it did not rely on the black for personality.

And in the end it did not, there is so much happening all over.

There are a few stuck on bits, a bit of subtle montage.

On the far right some of Arc’s initial green markings.

I miss it.

Wish could have taken more better quality pics of the thing.

It is like a travel romance, intense for many days then gone.

But am happy it is complete, and very happy it happened.

There were 4 days to complete the mission before we left.

The hostel were it lives has a great vibe with great people.

The process was a joy and feel it is another signature work.

The painting seems to be viewed best at night with lighting.

The layers and shadows, colours merging into varnish show.

Like looking into water and seeing things in certain lights.

For me it became a little mesmerizing, lucky then that left.

Or I may still be sitting on the steps gazing..

Then with a final spray of varnish, we left C:
