Monday Night Jam Sessions

  Monday Night Jam Sessions

Inspiration. To create a regular meeting space for creatives in the greater community, a weekly heart for interaction, facilitating creative culture and igniting creative synergy- on Mondays when little else was on. From music to art to creative conversations, both an exhibition space and space for creation.

Communication. It was promoted around the uni and on free websites. Feedback was positive, there were a number of people interested in jamming, many who had either not played in public or picked up an instrument since school, others who were regular enthusiasts.

Collaboration. First was to book the space, Evolution Bar at the University was available for free as we were an official Student Club. Members of the team had core instruments to be there weekly- drums, guitars, tambourine, etc., others brought their own also. We put on a BBQ and decorated with art and funky props.

Giant thanks to Andy on this one, the individual below left. Your dedication and enthusiasm was second only to my own. Then when I left to Australia to attempt projects in Byron Bay he kept the pulse pumping for many months. Cheers also to Simon, Nick, Graham, Katie, Orliaa, Mara, Todd, Mark and Sikander. An epic and enjoyable marathon!

Creation. Space booked for every Monday of 2006, core instruments handy, core team and friends to get things started. We hit the University and local area with promotion. It ran for about a year and a half. Creative synergy was kicking, people were playing each others instruments, sharing, collaborating, working with each others rhythms, sharing food, creating artwork, mingling creatively, fresh ideas, exploring creativity.

Exhibition. People came to know about the MondayNightJamSessions by word of mouth, flyers, newspapers, student magazine, radio, etc. There was some stunning music from soo many instruments, from bongo to electric violin across the spectrum with many recordings! Creative synergy ignited, music and artwork created, skills and relationships developed in this public creative meeting space.

Repeat. It was repeated the next year in the same venue. It is simple a simple one to run, setup and close down, it just takes a roster of sorts. It would be very simple to repeat for other Universities and Schools and anywhere venues are available for free.
